en Oeser and Robert Van Fleet will be leading survey trips to Bear Hole: a long, horizontal, mazy cave in Grundy county on Saturday, September 9, and the weekend of September 23-24, which will most likely be a camping trip. The cave is mainly canyon passages, is dry, and only horizontal gear is needed. There is about a mile hike to the cave from the parking area, with an elevation loss of almost 600 feet, so the hike is tougher than the cave. We have special permission to this remote region of South Cumberland State Park, so come while you can. Although we have mapped over 4800 feet in the cave so far, we have only gone about 500 feet from the entrance. No survey experience is required, just a willingness to hold the tape, write numbers, or check loops. We will be at the September grotto meeting for final details, but we will likely leave Nashville around 6:30am on Saturday the 9th, and carpooling is recommended.
